The last few months have seen a massive increase in repression, arrests and disappearances by the Chinese authorities in response the enormous uprisings around the Middle East and North Africa. The Chinese state, already threatened by massive strike waves last year, fears that this contagion could spread to the poor, the young people and the workers of China and threaten the whole regime.

The uprisings have shown that not even the most repressive, brutal and dictatorial regimes can hold back the floodgates when ordinary people decisively rise up and say that enough is enough.
